Whilst studying for my degree I’m hoping to become proficient in Premier Pro editing software and have at least 4 films under my belt that I have had a hand in editing by the time I graduate. This is the software of choice of many filmmakers and the SAE University Campus, I can edit in the creative surroundings of the campus on their Mac’s with my fellow students. I am currently researching and understanding editing techniques and the works of great film editors such as: Sergei Eisenstein, David Lean, Thelma Schoonmaker and Michael Kahn. Steven Spielberg is quoted of saying “I love editing, its one of may favourite parts of film-making” this is something I wish to able to comfortably say myself, once I understand and I’m possibly an expert in this field of film-making I know I can enjoy the process and hopefully one day become a working professional film editor. However, my biggest passion in film is to Direct and Thelma Schoonmaker once said “I don’t think you can be a great director without knowing a lot about editing”, so for the next 2 years I intend to edit as often as I can.
My Strengths are Directing and Producing as these are the areas I have the most experience in, I enjoy the challenge and seeing the project slowly come together as it approaches the day of the first performance. I also enjoy the process of casting a production, but I have found that the bigger the circle of actors you know, that when it comes to the next production you re-cast actors from previous shows. Some say its nepotism of the Theatre which can be somewhat true and doesn’t give other actors a chance but on the other hand its better the devil, you know and when an actor is good, you really want to work with them again.
My biggest weaknesses are camera operation/Cinematography and editing. On my first Student film I will be undertaking all of the camera work, this will be a first for me on any project. On the set there will be an assistant director who I can liaise with and have as a second eye when lighting and framing up a shot.
I won't be approaching my first day of filming with trepidation or anxiety, I have been studying the Canon camera XF100 and recently had an assessment of my camera competence, there are still some key areas needed to develop and with more use I will acquire these skills.
During my career so far as a performer I have tried to immerse myself into as many genres/styles as possible. Between 2010 & 2013 I ran a political theatre company where I produced and directed shows, the one I am most proud of is The Circus on Lime Street which was a site-specific piece set in the Court Room of St Georges Hall, Liverpool. The play was originally written for the theatre but I convinced the writer and the Council to stage it in the very court room that the lead character was sentenced to death in, this gained us a lot of exposure and publicity, we had an interview on North West Tonight News and played to sold out audiences. Between 2013 & 2016 I was co-creator of a Halloween Horror Show called The Creep and it was during this time I first produced film projects. Each year we made a trailer for the show and on our 4th show you can see that we have had developed as producers, creators of film.
These short trailers gave me the tastes and confidence to make more film along with my co-creator James. I wrote, produced and co-directed 3 political video shorts, 2 had the message 'Vote Labour' and the 3rd was a video aimed at getting people to vote regardless of who it's for, the message was 'Don't lose your voice, go out and vote' I am proud with what we achieved and loved the skill of filming and editing that James brought to the projects, these are skills that I would love to acquire and hopefully studying in film I can gain this knowledge and experience. As much as I love collaboration If I am skilled in every role of film making I can undertake projects with just myself to rely on. I have more video shorts that I have written and very keen to make.
I am currently studying Digital Film Production at SAE Liverpool and will graduate in 2020 but I have been working in the creative/entertainment industry for 20 years. I have a passion for the Theatre and it will always be an area of the entertainment industry that I hope to continue to work in and love, but at this present time I would like to focus my energy and career towards creating Films / Documentaries. I have always loved movies and I’m at a time in my life when I can see myself working in the Film Industry. The skills I have acquired working in the Theatre are transferable to film-making such as Acting, Directing and producing. These skills will need to be developed for the film industry but the fundamentals are very similar. I am always looking to challenge and develop myself so this next venture is certainly going to be exciting, enjoyable and give me much to learn.
I grew up in the 80’s so I have a deep love and affiliation for films of that period, there are so many to mention but here’s a few that I could watch over again: Back to the Future Trilogy, Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Goonies, Trading Places, Star Wars & Airplane and the list could go on. I have recently been studying the works of French Nouvelle Vague Directors Goddard & Truffaut, their style and influence to the film industry is much to be admired and hopefully I can emulate it, I’ve always loved French films and the works of Jean Pierre Jeunot, Luc Besson and Jacques Tati to name a few. Some other Directors I admire are Martin Scorsese, Mel Brookes, Quentin Tarantino & Steven Speilberg, again the list could go on and all the time I am introduced to new and amazing directors and film creators.
